Just north of Mal Pais taking a right at the famous “cruce”, is Playa Santa Teresa. Miles of white sand beaches flaunt incredible world class waves for all levels. Tourists and locals together enjoy the tranquility the ocean offers with gorgeous mountain landscapes in the background. Due to an eclectic population, Santa Teresa boasts international cuisine from all corners of the globe including: Italy, Israel, Thailand, Japan (Sushi), Argentina, France as well as excellent local tipico food. Many hotels are available ranging from lush and elaborate beach resorts to hostels catering to backpackers. Surf shops with rentals and lessons, yoga classes, internet cafes, and boutique style shopping, along with a dynamic nightlife make Santa Teresaa lively
little beach town. If you wake up early make sure to enjoy the surf, with the offshore winds grooming the waves of Santa Teresa into one of Costa Rica’s premier surfing destinations.
On the southern tip of the Nicoya Pennisula, 1 ½ hours drive from Paquera or 50 minutes from Tambor, lies one of Costa Rica’s most treasured beaches. Once frequented only by locals, this beach has transformed into an icon for vacation homes and quiet hotel getaways. Known for its miles of colorful rocky beaches, restaurants amid hidden coves, excellent sport fishing, and of course it’s breathtakingly memorable sunsets. Try horseback riding along the coast with one of the local guides, or at low-tide, discover some of the incredible tide pools forming natural hot tubs. Still employing dirt roads, you will notice the people here are certainly in no hurry. Mal Pais remains one of the crown jewels of Costa Rica.
About 20 minutes drive north of Santa Teresa along a scenic dirt road hugging the ocean, is the still hardly-yet-discovered Manzanillo. Sitting on a stunning ocean front littered with palm trees and rock reefs, people here enjoy the simple tranquility of the “pura vida” life style. Humble homes dotting expansive farms in the back country, children riding to school on horseback, and deserted beaches are common sights in Manzanillo. The famous once-a-year Sand Castle Contest is perhaps the highlight of festivities here where people enjoy the day on the beach, rum cocktail in hand, observing the different sand sculptures.Horseback riding, kayaking, and if you are daring enough, surfing the outer reefs, are some of the
activities. With only a few places to stay in town, an absolute relaxation will be experienced. Manzanillo is truly representative of everything pure and beautiful about Costa Rica.
